Nightmares

Your feet are racing the ground. Your heart is beating out of your chest. Your breathing is getting heavier and heavier by the second. Your mind is dehydrated. You don’t know where to go or what to do but you keep running. Sirens are wailing behind you. Red and blue lights are flashing everywhere. Police officers are shouting, “Freeze! Put your hands above your head!” But you don’t obey. You turn the corner and boom. A brick wall. You’re trapped. You try to find some other way of escape but it’s too late. You put your hands up and drop to your knees. You can’t help but let out a big sob as the officers come towards you with handcuffs. You don’t resist. They then slam your head on the concrete, blood flowing down your face like the Red Sea. They pick you up and put you in the car and you sit there looking out of the window wondering why, why am I target, Why am I as black as midnight, why can’t I be the bright morning day, at least I would be free, at least I would hear the bird chirps instead of running away from darkness. You sit in the car rethinking the actions that lead up to your current situation. It was all an allusion, a dream, a mirage. I didn’t run from a police officer, but a demon.
