Nighttime Whispers

It comes in the wild as we sleep:

the moors echo with animal calls

and return back to us, saying

don't walk alone,

the wolves are hunting tonight.

The winter covers the ground in frost

so that every footstep is seen

and the prints in the snow

tell stories unable to be vocalized.

Whenthe wind blows

through the trees

and down to our meadow

it says: the night is close to ending.

The sparks jump in our fireplace

as the horizon is lit by morning sun,

and as the sky gets lighter

you can hear the cries of the wolves

as as they return to rest.
