no makeup

with no makeup on, in a party too crowded,
would you still be there?
out upon the lawn, my recollection clouded,
would you still want to share?
i never had the knack for growing up forever,
still laughing at the time you chose a lake-swim-endeavor,
may it be on the fourth of july or december,
will you make my life something i can remember?

you weren't there when i pleaded innocent,
we spent our hours boasting we could pay our rent,
you stayed up late to watch the sun burn out,
and i almost yearned for something to give a damn about.
could you be here now, when i'm chasing my dreams,
when i'm realizing the world isn't as small as it seems?
could you pretend to be a teen, pretend to be clever,
and make our memories last a little less than forever?

with no glasses on, in a room too still,
could i still shine bright?
with someone else's photo on the windowsill,
could we remember that night?
