Nocturnal Summer

The time I spent nocturnal during summers made me realize a few things

As I woke up just as the sun was setting, I spent a lot of time alone.

Which was good for me I think.

I also spent a lot of time outside

I love summer nights.

It made me realize that the night is so quiet

You only hear the rustle of tree limbs

And the sound of your own breathing

2 a.m. in July. The best times

But as I was just getting tired enough to sleep

As the sun was coming up and settling itself among the morning sky

I absorbed the sounds

Birds, and cars, and the sound of the world coming to life.

And as people started to fill the streets and come into the world

I made my way to bed.

I found that I liked it better that way.

But another part of me was a bit regretful of my decision

Life went on as i slept, people made memories and lived.

I read something once that was about people of different ages

Giving themselves advice when they were younger

One guy said “Watch a sunrise more often, you miss so much when you sleep til noon”

And isn’t it true

That time alone was good for me to reflect

And almost find out who I was alone.

But people are what makes the world amazing and bright

I’ve had many nocturnal summers

But I think for now, I’m done with them

At least until I find someone to share them with.
