#NoFilter

A selfie taken, after several trials

My face looks back at me through the digital screen

hundreds of pixels form to make my smile

Hey, well isn't that a filter?

If I strip down what will I see?

Sighing in the shower, is that the real me?

Am I myself when I bleach my hair

Or fill my lungs with Marlboro-fused air

Maybe a rolled cigarette instead

Then it'll be the truth if I had said

"Hashtag, no filter."

If I ditch my meds

I'd stay in bed

Depressed or manic, static in my head

Dear God

Is that the real me?

I wonder if I ditch those perscription pills

And the hallucations come, and my mind goes ill

Dear God!

Is that the real me?

But those days I wake with ease

and my heart feels warmed by the gentlest breeze

And I rule the world with words of love

Discovering secrets of the patterns from up above

So glad, oh so glad to be ingrained

Into the great universal plane

On those days it's angels I see

And dear God, I hope that that's the unfiltered me
