Noise
Everyday started the same
I was awoken by the sound of him
slurping the poison that sparked his rage
It was so early;
no birds sang
and no crickets chirped
He chugged then stomped
Till he was pounding on my door
His voice demanded his entry
I stuffed my ears with my fingers
attempting to drown out his slurred words
But the door still squeaked
and he screamed and shouted, raising his fists
They thudded and smacked,
cries escaped my lips
He yelled so loud the house rumbled and vibrated its bones
I pleaded for him to finish,
but he only stopped when my noise ended and my body went limp
I grabbed my rope
and headed for the woods,
ready to mute this unfair world
I focused on the crunch of the leaves with every step
And the wheeze of my lungs with every breath
The rope whipped and tightened around a sturdy branch
One more step and I was to be noiseless evermore
Then I heard a whisper,
at first quiet in the wind
Then it grew louder and stunned my mind
It was an angel,
who sang a song sweeter than any Siren
My ears bled and my eyes wept
I took a stride, ready to follow the angel
But with a quick slip, and a loud snap
My world has been silenced forever
