Noise with Purpose
You were always there, just there, until you become more.
But you didn’t hit me, knock me to the floor.
You took my hand, my chin in your grasp.
How was I to know I would fall so fast?
You made falling feel like flying, I could finally let go.
You discovered a side of me I didn’t know.
I was so enchanted and overjoyed that I tried to sing.
But I’ve always been scared of beautiful things.
I needed to shut you out, of that I was sure.
You made me feel things I’ve never felt before.
My stubborn arrogance was proud, my resistance was strong.
Who knew I could be so wrong?
No matter how hard I fought, you echoed in my brain.
I tried to ignore the impact you had on my life, tried to deny the change.
I crawled back to you the night my loneliness finally shattered my resolve.
I realized my life meant nothing without you, nothing at all.
So, what have I learned, what have you taught me?
Oh love, you’ve shown me what it means to be free.
I value independence, living on my own.
But I know that you’ll never leave me truly alone.
We think we want fame, fortune, protection.
But we really need vulnerability, love, connection.
Our hands aren’t meant for hate or violence.
Our words weren’t created for selfish silence.
