Not All It's Cracked Up To Be
When I was little, I wanted to be a grown up
I wanted to be big and tall.
I wanted to make my own decisions
I wanted to have it all.
I would wait for milestones to pass
First double digits, then teenager, then my sweet sixteen.
Oh how I longed for the day where I would be grown
And not have to worry about one single thing.
And then I got a job, starting to pay for things myself
Just had to do my taxes, and learning society’s rules.
I remember that being a kid was much easier
And my only job was going to school.
My eighteenth birthday is next week
And I will be the adult I always dreamed to be.
If I could speak to my younger self
I would tell her that being grown isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
