Not Another Plain Jane

Milena Celi Garrido Moreno.
Born in Inglewood, California and raised in South Central L.A.

One night my mother went out to her hair salon and never came back.
My father found out where my mother had gone.
She moved again.
He found her and took me to live with her and moved away with his girlfriend.
I had to look up the telephone number of his job to speak to him.
When I finally got to hear his voice again I couldn’t speak.
What could I say to a stranger?
I moved around A LOT.
Sometimes there was never any food in the house.
Some of my teachers noticed how light-headed I was and started bringing me food.

I am Milena Celi Garrido Moreno.
My favorite food is anything Italian.
My favorite colours are black, purple, blue, and green.
My favourite animal is the jellyfish.
My hobbies include reading, writing, listening to music, and drawing.
I know that I am so much more than all the things that have happened to me.

This is me, behind all the makeup and hairspray, The honest-to-goodness me.
