Not Another Statistic

Can I get a Revolution For we are the Revolution It's that time our time, to show those people The people who said we would never be something in life. The people who said we were all gang bangers, drug dealers, baby carriers, high school drop outs and more. Ignorant, dumb, careless, junkies. Jail birds-- all too dedicated to “the life” of the ghettos. All because we are of young black or Latino heritage. But I'll have you know we are not the future generation We are the now GENERATION! I'm tired of being told that I wont amount to anything in life that I will end up working at a Burger King Or that I will drop out of high school by the time I'm 16 Who are you to tell me what I am going to be Are you God, No “Well according to the statistics, your next in line to walk down the street with a baby carriage.” Who me? I don't believe so. The statistics may show the general population But it doesn't show that increasing group of teens Ready to set those bar graphs straight I've lived in the city my whole life Yes, I am of African American or Latino heritage Why should that dictate my future I will reach into the depths of my soul and proclaim my freedom I will declare that I am not just another statistic but a hard worker, ready to declare that even a statistic can't stop me from shining. Listen up my brothers and sisters No matter white, black, red, or yellow Blue, orange, purple or green, We stick together, no matter the differences. Keep your head up To show the enemy you're not giving up Give a smile To prove to those rude selfish people that you're not the same Be confident Because what you're doing is important Tell the monsters in your closet and under the bed They can come out now Because you are not afraid to do what's right anymore Make a phone call to hell not to reserve a place in that burning furnace But to tell the devil "Here's your credit card, cancel the order you had to end my dream of being at a high level education, and my dreams of being who I am." Stand up and show everyone who's boss. Remember those people who told you that you would never be anything in life? prove to them that you are capable of switching from Urban to Corporate measures pay attention to yourself, and your goals not to the outsiders that try to bring you down. And when you make it big and they're walking into your office asking YOU for a favor remind them that they told you that you'd never make it that far Never forget your past or where you came from Never forget the events that led you to your current state of being Because you're going to need it to fuel the fire in you begging for change. And when it's over you're going to need it to help the other children get through when they can no longer when they get tired, of this stereotypical world and want to end it Tell them put down that knife, gun, rope, and bottle of pills. If I made it, you can make it too, and here's why... You can get that college education You can be that scientist who cures cancer, the next inventor, that famous ball player or designer Use your skills to become great there is none that is too little too small They all deserve to shine.
