Not a Dream Job

A single job to alter years of thinking the same way

Is one you don’t desire doing

It’s one not dreamt of while drifting off to sleep

To be a chemical engineer is my fantasy

But will that truly change my life?

I’m already working towards it

I’m already beginning to think in such a manner

And if I continue on this path, I’ll think this way forever

A job that changes your life

Is one that alters the way you think

It makes you see the world in different shades of truth and belief

The path you walk on would be changed by such a job

And no matter what career is currently sought after

It’s not one that would change a life

A job that opens your eyes to the world

Both its desolation and its beauty

Is the one that no one ever thinks they’ll be

As they age from toddler to child to teen

I’m not quite sure what job would change my life

Because if I knew, it wouldn’t be a change

So I’ll wait to see what the world has hidden in its pocket

And wander the fields of possibility until I’m forced to pick a path

For now, the dream of living my days as a chemical engineer

Is still planted deep in the soil of belief inside my mind

Waiting to sprout and bloom

And maybe something that happens there will cause a change

But that wouldn’t be the job’s creation, but the situations that lie within

And who is to say that at another job I wanted

My life would be any different?

Truth is, no matter where you go

Or what you do

Every second makes a difference

Every breath will change your life

Even in the tiniest of ways

But in order for a major change in the path you take as you age

To be made by a career

It needs to be one you never anticipated doing

Being a drive-thru worker, for instance

Is something no one grows up saying they want to be

But I’m mighty sure that if someone was thrown into that situation

Their view on the world would transform into something new

It’s not a dream job, not in the slightest

But dreams can’t always come true

Someone has to do the job that others crinkle their noses at the idea of

And that job is a special kind of job

It’s the kind that changes lives
