this is not a quiet voice
“This Is Not a Quiet Voice”
They told me
“Speak clearly.”
What they meant was
Speak carefully.
Don’t let your truth spill on the carpet.
Don’t raise your hands too fast.
Don’t sound angry—
Anger scares people who are comfortable.
But my voice was never meant to whisper.
I come from a lineage of trying anyway.
Of backs bent but unbroken.
Of names mispronounced,
dreams postponed,
and hope stitched together with duct tape and prayer.
I am not loud—
I am full.
Full of questions they never taught in class.
Like why potential is praised
but access is rationed.
Why talent is universal
but opportunity needs an invitation.
I learned early that silence is survival—
but it is not success.
So when I speak,
I speak with the weight of every time
I was told
“Maybe next year,”
“Be realistic,”
“People like you don’t usually—”
Finish that sentence.
I dare you.
Because I am here to complete it.
I am here as proof
that brilliance doesn’t need permission.
That resilience is not a résumé filler—
it is a skill sharpened by necessity.
I have failed publicly,
dreamed privately,
and grown in places no one was watching.
And still—
I rise with ink-stained hands
and a future that refuses to stay small.
This is not a speech.
This is a claim.
I claim my seat in rooms
that were not built with me in mind.
I claim my right to be excellent
without being exceptional just to survive.
If you are listening for polish,
you might miss the power.
Because this voice—
my voice—
is not quiet,
not convenient,
not done.
And if a scholarship is an investment in promise—
Then listen closely.
I am interest.
I am growth.
I am return.
