Not too long ago I

Not too long ago I made the mistake of turning on the tv

the oppressions of our world was all I could see

but I felt so useless just standing there watching,

part of a neverending hourglass- a grain of sand before the sea

Who is there to stand up for the innocent martyrs on the Gaza Strip,

who stood claiming their home, waving their flag with unwavering grip?

Who is there to hold the hand of the Syrian orphan

To protect it from oppression that they were undecidedly born in?

To shelter the families of Ukraine from the fire

that chases them from home, tell me, where shall they retire?

And here I am now, holding all of this truth in the palm of my hand,

shall I accept reality for what it is, or fall where I now stand?

Such petty things keep me up at night

like the essay for English and the gym class plight

but how must it feel to be in such a place

where day after day for your life you must fight?

I may never get to see this ugly side of the world,

but what I can do is, let the truth be unfurled

divert the attention away from the place of false stars

to the places of the world where the innocent lie behind bars

and destroy the distractions that are holding us back

from helping our kind, this is where we lack

It is easy for me to turn off the tv

and act like I don’t have any idea of what I have just seen

but what about those whom I am watching on the screen

can they turn off reality, or escape their deadly scene?
