Nothing

I could tell you I love ice cream so much I simply couldn't do without,
Or that I'd perish with my best friend absent, beyond a doubt,
I could write about anything I "need" in this poem for you,
But honestly, anything that I need would be untrue.

Ice cream is awesome, surely, but I won't fall over if it's gone.
My best friend lifts me up, but if she left, I'd (somehow) carry on,
Even without her, without any friends, I know I wouldn't die,
I know because I've been there before, and yet, I'm still alive.

There was a time, colder than now, when I was quite alone,
No one to sit with at lunchtime, no friends to visit home,
No numbers traded or plans made; days silent as my phone,
Still though, it didn't bother me - you can't miss the unknown.

Now to me, it's known very well; this love we call friendship,
And the better something is known, of course, the more it can be missed.
A child born blind misses not sunsets, those born deaf miss not songs,
But those given sight and hearing, to be without it, somethings gone.

Similarly, I didn't know what I could have until I did,
I lost it once after that, and it was hard, I will admit.
But I lived on, scars on my heart, to toughen but always ache,
Pump my blood throughout it all, through every friend I lose and take.

I've lost a family member who I love, and yet here I still stand.
I've lost a boy to time, never again will I hold his hand.
I lost and found again someone who I can't imagine life without,
But even if they were gone, my life would still be here somehow.

I've had no one before, and I could have no one again,
Possessions matter not to me; trophies are cold and dead.
People matter much to me, I love my family and friends,
If they disappeared, my heart would ache, but yet, the world would still spin.

All we ever have is not whats at our fingertips,
All we ever have is not someone whose lips we kiss.
All we ever have is underrated, and hard to see,
At least, without a mirror. All I'll ever have is me.

We shouldn't rely on another to be the missing half to our soul,
But instead find another who reminds us we're already whole.
We shouldn't say that we need anything, that without it, we would die.
Alone or known, if your heart beats, you're gonna stay alive.

Even if there was a foreclosed sign on my front lawn,
And I was without a single friend who would help me carry on;
I know I might not want to try, I might just want to die,
But I don't require anything. Even alone, I'd try.

Try to keep myself alive. I've tried before.
I survived.
