Nothing Important
This is nothing important
As nothing ever really is
Just the musings of a mind
With carousel thoughts
That stop and go before I can grasp them
I remember a night
When the air was so cold
My lungs ached with every inhale
And though I did not mind the chill
I think I'd simply grown used to it
But that was not important
Because now the air is scorching
And runs across my skin
In thick licks of heat
And somehow more time has passed
Than I would have thought possible
Before I stumbled into situations
And fell into friendships
Sometimes I'd like to scream
To the Universe
Draw her attention
Ask her if she knows my name at a mention
But I don't think she hears
Or cares
Maybe it's lonely up there
With no sound
Or maybe it's louder than anything
The echoes of all of our feet on the ground
But no matter how hard we try
(Shooting rockets up to the sky or needles into our veins)
I have to conclude
That we’re looking in all the wrong places
Because the stars will shine without us
Indifferent to our demise
And the trees wouldn't care
There'd be less pollution in the air
Would the flowers wilt and weep
And the oceans still sweep along the shore
The mistake we make is differentiating
Ourselves from everything we try to understand
Maybe everything we need to understand
We already have figured out
In the way coffee smells in the morning (despite its bitter taste)
And the happy-calm feeling when somebody grabs your hand
Or the way the sun scorches the sifting sand
There really wasn't a point to this
As there isn't a point to a lot of things
Because in the end
That math test you failed won't matter
When the Universe swallows us all
And spits us back out as atoms
And I'm not sure if that terrifies or calms me
Because no one else seems
To think about vastness
Or gets tangled up in webs
Of spider silk and time
