The Novel of You


We sat there in silence Surrounded by novels and each other And as you studied your book I studied you The way your eyes fell across the page The way your lips moved in time with the words The shallow hum of your breath You looked up at me then And I looked away Hoping you didn't notice that If I was given a test On the way your jaw slopes into your neck Or how your eyelashes brush across your cheeks I would not miss a single question
