Numbers

When one looks up the definition of “Numbers”,
They get “an arithmetical value, expressed by a word, symbol, or figure.”
What the definition doesn’t say is “deadly”
Because that’s what these numbers can become.

The definition doesn’t admit how obsessed people become of them,
So obsessed that we start acting like human calculators,
Created by Texas Instruments themselves,
You know the ones people pay hundreds of bucks for,

Only we aren’t trying to figure out,
How many watermelons Tony bought,
Or how much the sales tax is on a candy bar,
Instead we are calculating our self worth.

Because our intelligence is based off of a GPA,
Also known as a number,
Our beauty is based off of a number on a scale, and the inches we have around our waist,
These are numbers too,

Because my class in society is based on my income,
My Wisdom is based on the number of years i've been alive,
Not what i've been through,
Because my popularity is based on how many people like me, and how many followers I have on a social media account.

And most of the time we get error,
As if we pressed the plus button too many times,
For when we want a big number we get a small,
And when we want a small number we get a big one.

Calculating is all we do,
And when the numbers aren’t right..
No one would pay hundreds of bucks for you.

And sadly, the most important numbers are the ones we can’t change,
The ones we hear about everyday,
The ones that don’t affect everyone,
So some of us still don’t see an issue,
Because we would rather say “I’m happy I don’t deal with that”
Instead of helping those that it affects.

Because no one wants to do anything about,
The number of women afraid to walk home, alone,
in the dark,
The amount of money,
We miss out on just for being female,
The number of deaths that occur,
Because kindness is now nonexistent,
And how Privileges are based on,
The amount of pigment in our skin.
