Obligation

The word rolls off my tongue like sour milk

Obligation

Like a flea that pesters relentlessly

Obligation is snaked through society

Compelling people to be things they’re not

Forcing smiles and hiding tears

Obligation

What an ugly word

Sitting in church praying for people

I don’t know

Not because I feel moved to

But because I’m obligated

Faking laughter and small talk

To pass time

Not because I like these people

But because I’m obligated

Working a dead end job

Day after day

Not because I enjoy it

But because I’m obligated

One day society decided that politeness

Would be based on pretending

That dishonesty was to trump

Uncomfortable truths

Obligation

What an ugly word
