OCD


 I pulled the door shut

and the alarm set

with two long beeps

as the switch safely

kissed the magnet.

Silence.

 

Now I turned the key in

the top lock,

straining to turn it left -

 to prove it was locked.

 

  And pulled it straight out –

  without turning;

  without unlocking.

 

  Then turned the key in

  the bottom lock,

  straining to turn it left -

  to prove it was locked.

 

  And pulled it straight out -

  out without turning;

  without unlocking.

 

  I pushed the door

  with an outstretched hand.

  It held firm.

 

  Now I pulled

  the brass letter box,

  fingers trapped  

  by the heavy flap.

  And pushed.  And pulled.

  Again. And again.

  And again.

  And walked down the path.                                                      

                                                               

  At the gate I

  looked back and -
