Ode to the Crescent City(on the twentieth anniversary of Katrina)

Beneath the southern sky where Mississippi flows,

Lies a historic city three centuries old.

NOLA, where the jazz trumpet blows,

A symphony of cultures, tales both timeless and bold.

In the French Quarter, echoes of jazz and hope,

Spanish arches and French flair, where histories elope.

Bourbon Street awakens as twilight glows,

A vibrant tapestry where dreams and music grow.

A carnival of light, Mardi Gras parades afloat,

The city ignites in purple, green, and gold.

Jambalaya and beignets, crawfish and gumbo,

Creole cuisine, a paradise to behold.

Majestic oak canopies, streetcars rumble below,

Where history and modernity intertwine as a whole.

Above-ground tombs, where spirits coast,

Voodoo whispers, stories left to be told.

In 1718, French settlers cast their roles,

New Orleans thrived, a beacon proud to show.

Through wars and trials, it steadily rose,

A blend of cultures the world now knows.

Katrina's wrath left scars that expose,

In shattered homes and hearts laid low.

Through pain and loss, through sorrow's throes,

Yet from waters and ashes, hope arose.

When levees broke, the waters claimed their hold,

A city drowned, its heartbeat slowed.

Yet neighbors reached through currents cold,

In bonds of courage, stories still unfold.

The Superdome a refuge, sorrow untold,

Songs of prayer and mourning softly flowed.

Through grief and loss, resilience took its mold,

New Orleans rose—defiant, proud, and unbowed.

Years passed, and from heartache, strength was sewn,

In second lines and stories proudly retold.

The city healed, through kinship deeply known,

Its pulse renewed, resilient and consoled.

But change is swift, and progress strolls,

New faces come as old roots go.

Communities shift, histories are bestowed,

Stories rewritten, futures foretold.

Oh, Crescent City, cradle of dreams, our hearts and souls,

In your embrace, history’s echoes roll.

You dance, you laugh, in moonlit grove,

Where life sways and passion dares to rove.

New Orleans, a symphony where cultures are extolled,

A city of spirit, timeless—hearts overflow.

With rhythms flowing and passions stoked,

The Big Easy endures, its fire evoked.

Beneath the southern sky where Mississippi flows,

The Crescent City’s heart in timeless rhythm glows.
