An Ode to Lost Parenthood
Actions move too quickly
Pain is in the heart
Blood gushes thickly
Two lives fly apart
A mother’s cry is heard
Yet no one was the burden
Music always helps her calm
But the small chirps of a bird
Can’t mend the pain of hurting
The doctor squeezes her shivering palm
To despair the little things
Won’t change the numbness of the past
For despair will break the wings
And rip the heart in half
A father’s voice hums
The tune to a lullaby
As he wipes away a falling tear
He feels the grasp of a baby’s thumb
And can almost hear its little cry
It’s only been a year
