Ode to Masks

Dear, People Behind the Masks

Atlas

I thought you lived with the stars

for the longest time.

Too far to touch, let alone kiss.

I let myself think you were always close,

Especially when held tight in your arms.

You held the world on your shoulders

... but did you really? Who's world?

You let me down time and time again

When the world came crashing upon me.

I'll hold up my own world, thank you very much

Sun

You were too bright to look at

But I stared anyways, mesmerized.

Too bright to look at, let alone touch.

It was easiest to bask in your warmth

and brilliance at a distance until blinded.

You gave me warmth

... but it wasn't enough to forget the pain.

Blind, I followed you 'till I felt that cliff's edge

And found the strength to sever ties.

I'll be my own warmth, thank you very much

Tweedledee and Tweedledum

I enjoyed the fun and thrills

- the new path you lead me on.

Too close laugh, let alone breathe

I went along with the fun and games

Even though instinct told me to turn around and go home.

Reintroduced me to Absoleum, an old friend and I met new ones

I couldn’t see that I was falling deeper into the rabbit's hole until it was too late

I'll make my own path, thank you very much.

A mask herself,

D.M.
