Ode to my Spleen
Oh spleen, luscious spleen, oh I love what you do
You filter my blood so that I don’t have to
And unlike the ungrateful’s
I will never have you removed
For spleen, humble spleen, I love you, I do.
You hold a reserve of red blood cells for me
Just in case any come out in my pee
While recycling Iron at the same time
Says a study published in 2009
You might pop If you’re hit, much to my concern
But that’s forgivable when you ask not a thing in return
Just more blood cells to filter while you lay there so stern
Oh spleen, scrumptious spleen, my trust you have earned
My dear beautiful spleen, you make me so proud
My love for you is bigger than the magellanic cloud
Which in case you don’t know is a small galaxy
But you wouldn’t have time to learn that when you’re cleaning my pee
Day after day on your hands and your knees
Which you don’t even have because those are for me
All you have is some tubes to get the job done
And some filters you’ve been using since before I turned one
You work and you work
All day and all night
So that I can lay down
Close my eyes and sleep tight
Not worry about filtering my blood before bed
Nor at lunch or at breakfast, not until I am dead
You do it all for me, you hard working slave
You do it all voluntarily
So now I will behave
I’ll take care not to be hit in in my left abdomen
Also not drink rum, vodka or gin
At least not too often as not to stress you
For all the blood that you filter, it’s the least I can do.
