An Ode to Poems

There was a time

when it was hard to get me out of bed in the morning

I couldn't find a reason or will

to go on with my life

to live each and every day

I needed an outlet

a way to scream without screaming

Poetry became my screaming

I can scream and shout and cry

all without exhausting my body

or draining myself mentally

I found myself

I found a reason to love myself

I found a reason to get up

I found reasons to breathe

One foot in front of the other

One step at a time

I live each day thinking of rhymes

Poetry saved me.
