Ode to a Slip of Paper

"Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got."

I don't think there's anything more true than that.

The world is changing, slipping and twisting in different ways,

Ways I don't recognize anymore.

Is it just me?  Or is it just the world?

Well, it doesn't really matter.  "I know what I know."

When I've got something that's dragging me down, I know just where to go.

I've got a little box that I keep my happiness in.

"It's just a box of rain," one might have said.

But I know better.

When I begin to spiral out of control, I just open the box

and read some slips of paper.

"I love you."
