Ode to the Ugly Mango
oh sweet little yellow mango,
how is it that i have overlooked thee for so long?
had i known that it was you who was the source
of my tasty dried snacks,
you who was the inspiration and flavoring of delicious
mango flavored sorbets and frozen cream
i would not have walked past you so quickly in
the grocery store
the praise and gaze and squeezing and eating pleasure i
took in your more flamboyantly dressed red cousin
would have been bestowed upon you, sweet yellow mango
for your flesh is tender and sweet and juicy and creamy and yes
why yes i will declared this aloud- you ARE the ambrosia of the gods!
not some exotic passion fruit, or prickly pineapple, no.
move aside and begon deviled thing of marshmallow fluff and syruped clementines for you are not ambrosia, no! far from it it is but the humble yellow mango, comely dressed in the saffron color of monks and tropical sunrises.
a small fruit that fits comfortably in my hand, with ripened flesh easy to pierce, easy to slurp off the pit, and easy to remove meat from skin
i eat you one luscious piece at a time awed at every bite at the bursting
MANGO-NESS of you.
i swear i will never look over you again,
sweet
yellow
mango.
