Ode to Wallpaper

Freshly placed shiny and new
It arrived ready to dazzle passerby
Reserved and haughty it purred and cooed
Danced and sang and recited

But no one noticed it
The Woman of the Wall

Not discouraged nor worn
But resourceful and determined
To stand apart from her solitary prison
She studied and performed but to no avail

Only the Fly heard
Forlorn, the Woman of the Wall

Content but not satisfied
It carried its strain
The fly her sole companion
Until one day newspaper brought
To her untainted surface
The gruesome death of her devoted confidant
Her personage a graveyard

Woe! The life of
The Woman of the Wall

Alone and scared it stood
Fading and frayed in tribulation
Until residents of her desolate hall
Took interest in her well-being
And made her upkeep a Celebration
They took turns patching, treating her with care
Dressing her up for the world to see

She felt loved and needed
Wanted and beautiful
With the thought that “Someone loves Me.”

The lights dimmed and the corridor grew cold
To match the sudden turn in her protectors’s affections
A War of Hurt and Pain, Ignorance and Despair destroyed their amicable relations
She wanted to scream, “Hey Stop! LISTEN to ME, LOOK at ME.”
To fix these poor degradations
But alas, she couldn’t compete with the lavish allure of 3-Dimensions
And lost her home, her heart, her love
To the world of superficial usurpations

The night grows dark
She stands alone except for the chains that bind her
Her guardians deserted her to wander other halls
All that was left were little reminders
A dab of paint, an affectionate etching
Was not enough to cover the wear
The rips the tears the stains and the holes
Her broken battered and battle-scarred countenance

Slowly and sadly the process started
Inch by inch painstakingly parted
Her head drooped and her feet furled up
The river ran dry as her bedraggled arms came down to reveal
The threadbare wall underneath
Miserably she fell to the floor
To Live the Life of Wallpaper no more

But to live apart
The Woman and the Wall

The dawn approaches
And the sun rises on

A Woman

A Wall

And her Desire to get over it.
