Old Friend

Dear Depression,

Hello old friend.

It's been a while since we've last talked.

You look exactly how I remember you -

as if I could ever forget.

Sometimes

I see you

as I'm walking

with my friends.

You wave,

sometimes.

I try to avert my eyes

and walk quickly past.

Sometimes

you follow me home.

I try not to look out the window

and see you staring up at me.

I can't say

I've missed holding your hand,

and dragging you with me

everywhere I go.

It's funny,

how tightly I held onto you

for all those years.

I couldn't seperate myself

from you.

You may have abused me,

but you were also

a part of me.

That was the scariest part

about starting to lose you.

Because you were mine

and I was yours;

and in losing you,

I lost a part of myself.

But

overtime,

I realized

that what I gained,

when I cut you off,

is so much more important

than what I lost.
