This Old Skin

This old skin I'm livin' in,
Has seen better days my friend.
When I was young, I was among, the cool kids.
You know the ones that smoked and drank and partied?
And most of the time, we partied quite hardy!
We got caught sneaking into the drive-in,
But we were lucky to be alive then.

It was better days to be sure.
No cell phones and computers,
And absolutely NO school-shooters!
Of course, there was bullying,
There will always be.
No matter how hard you keep trying,
Someone will end of dying, because of it,
And we still won't know why.

I've seen six years of being physically abused;
And I've been the user, and the used.
Life pulls no punches dear friend,
No pun intended, I've finally mended, my soul.
Yes, this old skin has really been inside a fish bowl.

I covered you in tattoos to remind me that life has memories that I'd like to remember,
And I'd love to live in the month of November,
Cause that's the month that we're supposed to be thankful for.

But what are we really thankful for?
Debt and bills, alcohol and pills?
Or family that lives miles apart, because they don’t have the heart
be near each other?
Or losing your Dad, then your Mother?

Old skin, my friend, we'll always be together
We seemed to have withstood the weather,
And we're better for it.
So it's not yet time to quit...
But to just admit....
That you're glad to be of the living.
