The One

I remember the first time you kissed me,

I was afraid, and unable to move.

I did not know what this action meant,

But I knew I wasn’t ready

and after, I cried for hours.

I told you I loved you, but what does love mean when you are only 13.

I waited, learned to love myself first, and met another man

Who waited until I found my comfort in my boundaries to even hold my hand.

We are now growing older together after six years,

Attending college together,

Growing closer to each other,

finding each other’s laughter,

mending each other’s sadness,

guiding one another,

and building each other.

I did not want that first kiss, but I learned through love,

What is love? Is it happiness?

Is it laughter?

It is being able to live a year blindfolded

And yet still trusting every move that he chooses for you,

Knowing he will protect you,

Knowing he will not hurt you,

Knowing he will hold your hand through every obstacle,

I now know what is love,

He is love.
