One Day

I live in a shell,

Protected from all outside dangers.

Living in peace, I wait to emerge,

To be embraced by the cool, soft air of a new world.

            One Day…

I think of the people who made me.

The two people who conceived my life.

The day is soon to come when they shall see my face;

And love me.

            One Day…

I lay and wait in silence

Considering the glorious future awaiting my creators and I.

I begin to prepare myself

To endure a new world.

            One Day…

New people to love,

New things to do,

New things to taste,

            And smell,

            And see,

            And hear,

            And touch.

I look to a new life with my creators;

To be cherished and taught and loved by them.

            One Day…

But now something is wrong.

My shell has been opened wide.

I feel vulnerable and frightened

For it is not yet time for me to abandon my shell.

            One Day?

Days go by,

My shell remains open.

I wish to ask my creators what has gone wrong.

But I am locked into silence.

I only hope that I will be fine…

That my creators will be fine.

            One Day?

One day, it all changes.

A silver monster with claws reaches into my shell.

It grabs my right leg.

            And pulls,

            And pulls,

            And pulls.

Its sharp teeth dig into my skin.

I have no strength with which to fight back and protect myself.

This is not the work of my creators,

But the work of a professional murderer,

                                                An executioner,

                                                            A serial killer.

I begin to see that my One Day will never come…

As the monster pulls, all I feel is pain.

It rips away my limbs

            One

            By

            One.

It rips them slowly as if to cause torture,

As if destroying me is an art.

            My One Day is gone…

The only thing that remains of me is my head.

The head that holds my brain,

The thing that keeps me alive.

My greatest treasure aside from my heart.

Still, the monster has no mercy and

Takes great pride in crushing such a treasure.

Only to be sucked from my shell and placed on a table with the rest of my pieces.

            Why?

What did I do to deserve such a death?

I was a life that should have happened.

My creators, you risked so much just to have me flushed

            Away,

Forever,

                                    From you.

I loved you…

Where was your love for me?

One Day…The day that never came.
