One Dose

One shot, one puff, one pill One dose is enough to kill Putting your life at risk for a thrill Just because there is a hole in your heart you can’t fill Living life like a game of chance She seems to have a normal life at a glance But at night she does a deadly dance With a drug that puts her in a trance She does this to numb the pain Living life as if it were a game Knowing there’s nothing to gain From a life that’s lived in shame She doesn’t know today is her last Wishing that drug was a thing of the past Her life thrown away so fast Just by using that drug as a mask Her family sits at her wake Each of their hearts starting to break There is only so much they can take For their daughter can not be replaced She sits in an empty chair Watching her moms’ blank stare Wishing that her thoughts could be shared She whispers to her mom “though not in body I will always be there” Her family and friends visit her grave She sees the words “Beloved Daughter” engraved If only her life could have been saved She would have grown up to be so brave
