The One I Loved

To my first love,

One year ago we were together

You told me I was your everything

The first thought on your mind as you opened your eyes

And your last breath before bed

When we were together it was pure fire

Ignited from the sparks between us that never ceased

You were my best friend

And your lips on mine felt like home

We never really had that much time together

After all, we lived in different states

Left with nothing but distance

And late night phone calls

It only got harder as each day passed

We just kept throwing knives at each other

And calling it love

The person I fell in love with was a mirage

A year later we’re apart

I began to go insane

Nitpicking the smallest things

Losing pieces of myself within you

A year later you hate me

What we had is now gone forever

There is no more love

No more days full of you

A year later I stay up

Tears dripping like a faucet

That I can’t seem to turn off

And regrets pour in

A year later it still hurts

I want nothing more than to hear your voice

Finding myself scrolling through old photos

Praying for any part of you

The person I fell in love with was a mirage

A mistake

But a beautiful one

-Isabel
