One of Seven Billion
Somedays I know who I am
'Well, obviously I am Devin Stewart'
And in the moment, it means everything-
"Devin Stewart:
Noun - A Black kid who's gonna be something one day;
He'll go to college, and solve the world's problems"
But then I think...
I don't know what that means;
"Devin Stewart"
All I hear is a common name
Of a common person
With a common life
And I think some more...
My name belongs to plenty of others
So that makes me one of many
One of thousands, maybe millions
And then I think about it
And I'm one of seven billion
One of seven billion
And I think some more...
So what identity do I deserve?
This question runs around my head
I think and I think and I think and I think
And it becomes clear
I'm just here
But then I think...
"What if I wasn't here?"
Then there'd be 6, 999, 999, 999 people instead of seven billion
Then it becomes apparent to me
Even though seven billion is a big number
It still needs my 1 to be whole
I know who I am
"I am Devin Stewart"
My identity is that I am part of something bigger
A unique and necessary fragment of a larger picture
And without me
It wouldn't be the same
Something wrong with this poem?
