One Step at a Time

Creativity always came naturally to me as a child.

It was only when I began abiding by societal expectations,

When I slumped into a dark abyss and stress piled.

I changed my course of action based on what others wanted.

They wanted me to have money, a family, a retirement plan.

I needed approval, but I was daunted.

Most teachers pushed on student loans.

“Sallie Mae is your friend and debt is good,”

But I didn’t want to dig my own grave and turn into bones.

There were teachers, however, that pushed me the right way.

They helped me through the process,

And took the time to revise my essays any day.

I knew I needed to follow in the footsteps of people who helped me.

It would take a lot of work and money,

But if I could help just one student, how ecstatic I would be.
