One Of Three

One Of Three

There is a boy in this world on the verge of 23,

He's at the park with his girlfriend sitting under a tree.

They find a place by the coast to kill weekend time,

As he lays out a blanket, she opens the wine.

The winter months have just ended and spring is in store,

They both don't know why they haven't done this before.

The two enjoyed a large picnic and a really nice talk,

Now the girl stands up, "Let's go for a walk!"

Looking back as his partner, the boy cracks a faint smile,

He say's "Why don't we just stay here for a while?"

The girl asks the boy, "Is everything okay?"

She can feel the twitch of his emotional fray.

The boy tries hard to not reveal his fear,

He says "Everything's fine, can't we just stay here?"

The girl sits back down and reminds him of the ring,

"You know that you can tell me anything."

The boy speaks of the dinner he had last night with his father,

How he feels that his parents have lost all their honor.

"I screamed at my dad in unforgiving revile,"

"For he told me last night I am not an only child!"

The boy looks up and begins a subtle cry,

"Why'd he keep this from me? There's no good reason why."

His fiancée is startled, and begins to think,

For she can feel her heart beginning to shrink.

"He must've felt ashamed, broken, and afraid,"

"For your father to tell you this was beyond brave."

She then asks of his siblings, "Are they alive?"

The boy responds "No, they were born a still birth."

"I am the only one of three to have stayed on this Earth."

"I was stuck at the hospital for almost 3 weeks."

"The doctors had said that my chances were bleak."

"My parents came to visit me almost every day."

"My dad said he wouldn't lose another child the same way."

The girl wipes the tears falling down from her face,

Hugging her fiancé in a supportive embrace.

She says "Please, for me, make amends with your dad…"

"He loves you so much, you are all that he has.”

The boy begins to smile and release his misery,

For without his father he doesn’t know where he'd be.

The couple stands up and they walk toward the sea,

They live on and rejoice, in their family's memory.
