Only a Chuckle
I stepped shakily into the hall
Everyone staring at me
Apparently this was not just a black tie event
It also included corsages, plus-ones and oh god
High Heels
But you didn’t laugh
You chuckled
Not a sneer or a mocking cry
Just a chuckle
Even in my mother’s stupid knee high dress
With sneakers
You still only chuckled
It was over were strung when you said yes
It was over that moment you took her hand
It was over when you held her as your own
That she chained you down
You were hers
You were hers as she kept you at her side
As she cut your hair and burned it to nothing
But I couldn’t bring myself to cry
Or scream
Or even sigh
All I could do was chuckle
It was like you were her muscular lap dog
And all I could do was chuckle
I chuckle as she forces you into coral bow ties
I chuckle at your gritted teeth as she squeezes your hand
I chuckle as she slowly brings you down
As she keeps you laced up in her shoes
As you stare across the room as you in an attempt to say "Save Me..."
All I can do is chuckle
