Onward or Sink
We’re in a sea.
The waves of gray roar and among them lie the separate islands of life.
The journey between each mound of salvation are long and treacherous.
The strokes seem insignificant and the body fatigues.
The mind quickly follows.
Debates of worth, negotiations for sanity and survival quickly arise.
Should I continue to strive toward the unknown?
Is it too late to return to what is familiar?
Is it worth it to just drown somewhere in the middle…or else get stuck there.
Despite the seemingly forward strides, am I truly treading water?
Flailing limbs and angry gesticulations in the quicksandish waters only drag me down further.
I am drowning.
I am sure hope cannot be found on the next island.
How to do I know it will not just merely be another step toward the final destination?
Must I do this again and again and suffer time after time in order to get there?
When will it end?
I may as well drown.
The abyss guarantees the salvation I am seeking.
It ensures a different kind, but salvation nevertheless.
Maybe downward beats forward, maybe I am struggling in the wrong direction.
If I rest my arms, I may sink to where I am truly meant to be.
And perhaps that just may be at the bottom of the sea.
