Open Book
"Where are you?"
"Why haven't you answered me?"
"I need to know who you're with"
"Im doing this because I love you"
I wasn't allowed to go out
With some of my closest friends
For you feared that they would whisper
And lead me away from you
"You know I can tell you've put on weight"
"You're wearing that tonight?"
"Why didn't you dress nicer?"
"Im doing this because I love you"
Body confidence went away
But I thought that you were just trying to make me care for myself
I took it as you fixing me
You were shaming me
"Let me see your phone"
"Why did you change your password?"
"How many guys have you been texting?"
"I'm doing this because I love you"
I was an open book to you
I had to be
Otherwise you'd get mad
And I would feel guilty
"What do you mean you don't want to have sex?"
"You shouldn't be so prude"
"I bet you'd have sex with him"
"You'd do it because you look love me"
You tried to take the part of me
I didn't want to give away
I wasn't ready and you got mad
I never gave myself up
"Because I love you" isn't an excuse
To demand or control or manipulate
It doesn't give you power over me
It doesn't make actions or words justifiable
Now I have people in my life
Who watch over my health
Who bring me joy and happiness
And say "because I love you" for the right reason
Now I have friends who support me
Who think I'm beautiful and strong
Who uplift my soul and spirit
And say "because I love you" for the right reason
Here I am, stronger without you
Happier, free, full of life
I made myself leave, and I said to myself
"It's because I love you"
