open heart

for you

my heart bloomed open

an insatiable wildflower colored red

your eyes

dark and tempting

studied the inside and blinked promise

and through my veins gushed a sunrise that drew me

from a sleep from which i thought i would never wake

your fingers

deft and slender

brushed against the petals and i felt like—

no, i knew—

i was home

but then you blinked again

and with one last caress you walked on

through the many fields of many others

and the throbbing wildflower, soaked with sunset,

gazed at your slipping silhouette

without you

my heart

my open heart

shuddered and entered a state of eternal nyctinasty

and now all the bloody petals have fallen

to the bottom of my ribcage
