An Open Letter to the Dead

Dear Lydeparted:

I’m missing you

And you're missing

You don't write

You never call

I don't even know where you are

I’m missing you

And you're missing out

On our birthdays

On your birthday

Graduations and baby showers

Sometimes, I miss that you're missing

When what I still have makes me happy

But then I remember you

And what's to miss

My eyes mist over

I remember what's missing

What makes the world amiss

I try to save my memories but by now

Some are missing, others misshapen

More are lost each day to the mists of time

I think I hear you

I am mistaken

I have mishap after mishap

Imagining you were in the crowd

And I just missed you

What I really miss

Is that voice in the back of my head

Asking if you miss me

Because I’m missing you dearly

I’m missing the way you spoke and misspoke

The way you looked

All the ways you loved me

And simply the way you called me

Your friend,

E
