An Open Letter to Society

i haven't the slightest idea who i am. and the sexist society i live in isn't making it any easier for me to figure it out. It's like i'm drowning in a sea of my own not yet matured womanhood... my own subconscious, the subconscious that society has molded for me,mind you, forcing my thoughts back down my throat and replacing them with lies that will please everyone but me. Lies that will fit society's warped perspective of how a female should be. Lies that tell me what to wear, how to speak, how to walk, and how to think. Lies that I will eventually become. i am unable to breath..unable to think..unable to do anything,or be anyone other than who society tells me to be. i don't have time to try to define myself. i am too busy choking because the fact that i will never be special is too hard to swallow. Never special. Just a factory made item. One of many, all alike. Inspected for differences-i mean flaws-and tossed away if they are found. "Women should be fragile." "Women should be feminine." "Women should be affectionate." "Women should be nurturing." "Women should be perfect." Well let me just say that i am not. i am not fragile-i couldn't get these eyes to shed a tear if i tried I am not the most feminine-i enjoy drinking juice directly from the carton i am not affectionate in the least-the word is barely in my vocabulary And i am not nurturing-i can't even keep a cactus alive. So am i not worthy of being a woman? because i'm not perfect like society has tried to groom me to be? It is so disheartening that as soon as we leave our mothers' womb, we-as young innocent girls-are being molded, and shaped, and formed with care to fit an ideal that doesn't even exist... and that if i should set foot outside of the limits that society has set for me-if i dare to break down the walls and barriers that society has so graciously built up around me-i will be looked down upon. Because they are sitting there on that wall, and i am now down below. All because it's just easier if i stay in my place All because it's just easier if i act like a lady All because it's just easier if i conform It's just easier if i lie face down and let society rob me of my individuality. Right? I mean, really, who am i to challenge these gender roles? Some nerve i have to feel as though i should be an individual. And what audacity,to believe that this individuality should be encouraged! who am i to think that i have the right to live, love,or pursue happiness? Am i getting it now? Am i thinking the way you want me to think? Talking the way you want me to talk? Walking the way you want me too walk? No? Oh...well uh..let me try this apron on for size... Now,i know we'll never agree on this because you see through rose colored lenses, what i see as drops of my crimson colored blood shedding from a thorn prick... but i just want you to know and understand that I love myself, whoever I am,even if you don't.
