Optimism

On wet pavement

the clicks of heels

quicken

slow down

never-ending

every day is the same

I am losing my name

to the fast, fleeting rain

Eyes on the floor

shut every door

cut to the core

no one is around me

but streets are so crowded

Whispers and whimpers

raindrops and tears

all blend as they fall

footsteps are small

Dead on or dead down

either way vision gone

they know where they're headed

I admire their cold, quick steps

but that is not enough for me

on the streets where it is raining

there's so much to see

but we all just look down

Grey as the pavement

drown in the puddles

there is nothing

there has only ever been nothing

Stop.

My feet stumble

pupils tumble

the dark world is defied

and I have never cried

until I see the ugly weed

green and soaked it reaches out

pulls itself to higher ground

refuses to remain

it reaches up to taste the rain

My cover- tall and draping

I held so tight to block my sight

but I let go

and realize I'm not alone

the others still look down or out

the way I did before

An endless, open, leaping sky

embraces all the tears I cry

the teeth I show

the hands I throw

I look up to the clouds and cry

I let the raindrops kiss me

I drink them as I spin and fly

I run through streets and people

Singing, slipping, tripping, stand

I reach out and touch a hand

then eyes look up and see the rain

and hearts let go of tears and pain

We dance

We run

We fly

the salty drops don't sting my eyes

but rather fill me with the sky

We won't stop to love alone

so many fingertips are cold

and so we touch

umbrellas fly

no barrier to the endless sky

and soon enough the sun shines on

but we learned more when he was gone
