Or Is It
It’s not a big deal, right?
After working late into the night
She gave into that morning thought
“Thirty more minutes— that’s all you want.”
So the alarm was trumped and she gave into sleep
Only to wake up with worries of the week
The week would be hard and drag on in length
But, she was already tired and lacking strength
Running behind. Thirty minutes late?!
But, it’s not a big deal, right?
Sometimes want of sleep causes mistake
Shoes? Check…on the passenger side floor
I have my phone! Well, it fell by the door
Breakfast? The grab-n-go smoothie in the cup holder
Oh! There’s my jacket in the back; outside it’s so much colder
And she’s off! Perhaps in a little rush
But, it’s not a big deal, right?
She’s a pro at this stuff
So she takes off speeding
And the only thing she’s needing
Is to finish getting ready on the way
Grabbing that jacket is the first multi-task of the day
As her hand wanders behind her seat
So her car wanders along the street
But once that’s done, she can be distracted again!
If she’s finds her phone, there can be music then!
Eyes off the road: look, drift, look, swerve, on, on and on
But, it’s not a big deal, right?
Then she opens the smoothie, tab and all
Chug, chug, chug, but, putting it back, it falls
Staring down to see it spill
She picks it up: today she’s had her fill
Eyes, look up! What did you see?!
Brake lights lit up like Christmas trees!
Distracted driver, realize all this!
And the bicyclists, walkers, and the ditch you dismiss
You are stalking the lanes. Predator.
Threatening their lives and yours. Remember.
Ms. Sleepy
Ms. Worried
Ms. Distracted
Ms. Overconfident
By any name, you must learn
That no life, including yours, should be taken out of turn
Don’t let these names define your identity
But put on Order and Responsibility
Because “But, it’s not a big deal, right?” and “Or is it?”
Are questions that can ruin an eternity
