Oreo

Oreo

To think a childhood could reincarnate itself in mockery

Oreo

that's what they call me

Oreo

because I'm too black to be white, but not black enough to BE black

Oreo

because I'm black on the out side, white on the inside

 Oreo

because I talk like a "white girl" pronouncing all the letters in my words

Oreo

because I'd rather discuss physics and politics than who threw the first hit

 Oreo

because I can't roll my hips the way the other "black girls" can

Oreo

because I'm not afraid to be who I am

Oreo

because I'm milk's favorite cookie, because the white boys chase me like I'm the next gen Iphone

 Oreo

because my white friends call each other "nigga" then look to me for approval

Oreo

because I can tell the difference betwee Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and Morgan Freeman

Oreo

because I listen to Jill Scott and Common, whose music has nothing in common with Lil wayne and Drake

Oreo

because I keep a slang dictionary

Oreo

not because my mom or dad is white, they are very black thank you

Oreo

not because I know my seven principles of kwanza

Oreo

not because I can tell you about more black historical figures besides Martin Luther King Jr. Malcom X and Rosa Parks

but Oreo

because I'm too black to be white when my white friends call each other "nigga" and look to me for approval

but Oreo

because I'm not black enough to BE black when my black friends speak slang and roll their hips provocatively the way I can't

Oreo

because I'm black on the outside, white on the inside

but I only have one question: Do I look like a cookie to you?

I am not white

I am not black

My skin is brown

so stop trying to label me

I am not a generalization

My name is NOT OREO

My name is Maya

get it right
