I am alone

when the sky turns gold

and the heat hits my chest

a drunken man in a white tank top

grinning

I am alone

when the moon is high

and the gusts scream

a discordant couple shattering

lamps

I am alone

when the tides rise

and the salt waves crash

a subway car roaring

to places far from here

I am alone

when my thoughts drift

and I begin to question

a silence falls and I sit

empty

I am alone

when my eyes sight a dinghy amongst the heat and the gusts and the salt

a key clicks in a bolt

a fisherman in a barnacled beard

scolds me to row

warm eyes greet mine

and at last

I am whole.
