Our Flag
I looked at our flag flapping freely
Almost floating with Liberty as her
Pedestal. The sun shining on our
Flag like God shining down on
Jesus Christ.
So bright.
So beautiful.
So breathtaking.
I looked at my young, loving wife lying
On the bed. She squeezed my
Hand and said, “ Our flag will prosper
And shine throughout the land!”
I smiled and observed our flag flutter
Fearfully following Liberty’s dying light.
The stars jumped, twinkled, and sparkled,
Dancing about with menacing trouble
Above our flag.
So bright.
So beautiful.
So broken.
One by one, over 323 million suns
Began to strife. Brothers against
Brothers in a meaningless fight. One
By one, our brothers began to die off.
Brothers who forgot the reason to
Listen and love.
I wept and observed our flag torn and
Stained and dirty and limp. I screamed
Out to the suns to quit their fighting but
They kept on brawling and dying.
I wept.
I moaned.
I bawled.
As our flag laid her head on her bed,
Lifeless, my old, dying wife weakly
Squeezed my hand. I looked at her with blurred
Eyes and she told me, “ Husband, will our flag
Prosper and shine throughout the land?
Will the stars mend our flag?”
