Our Last Summer

I love(d) the lake,

children playing on the bank,

geese leading their families about,

and you, staring at me, with wide eyes.

I love(d) splashing you,

because you’d retaliate.

I love(d) playing games with you,

betting kisses and time alone,

but only if you made it in the basket.

I love(d) hearing you laugh,

your eyes squinting, your head thrown back.

I love(d) the summer,

bbqs, the 4th, the pool,

because you love(d) me.
