Our Moon
I just want to start this poem off by saying that before meeting him, I’d never been in love. Never looked into the stars above and thought, he and I are sharing the same moon. Never laughed so hard or smiled so much that my cheeks hurt. But now I do. I am. We are. I hold his hands and ignore his palm sweat. I look into his eyes and see him looking into me. Intimately. Intriguingly. I wear his t-shirts like trophies. They’re all drenched in his cologne. He’s never seen me naked, but I’d already given him all my private parts; the secrets I’ve kept, the stories I’d never tell anyone else. I rest my head on his chest and hear his heart beat match mine in cadence and tempo. I reread the text messages he’s sent me. They hold heart felt love notes next to colorful heart emojis. I play “our song” over and over again until the words become permanent to my tongue and the music almost feels like he’s here.
Sometimes, I wake up in a cold sweat in the middles of the night knowing he is anxious. Circumstance has scattered us across the map this pollen. He takes a sip of water from the glass on his night stand. He checks his digital clock and sees that it is 3 AM. He tosses and turns in bed sheets almost as soft as my skin and tries to settle. I wait for him to. I whisper, knowing that he can hear me, “though we are miles apart, and I am not laying in your arms, look up into the stars above and notice that you and I share the same moon.” I feel him smile. Hear him whisper his ‘I love you’s until he drifts off into sleep. I smile and know that this is love.
