Our Plight

Their plight is one that today we ignore

So allow me to open old wounds and make them sore

We put laws in place, and they still die

Are the people stupid or do politicians lie

The Sea turtles, those oceanic reptiles

They once spread out over Earth for miles and miles

Leatherback, hawksbill, green too

They’re all disappearing because of me, and you

The ocean once blue, clean and fresh

Is being swallowed, eaten alive, and put to death

The trash swoops in, like bats outta hell

We’re the source of it, why can’t you tell

You sit there, and you point and drill

As if throwing the blame gives you a thrill

Blame the oil, and other companies

“But don't look over here at me!”

The plastic, which chokes and blights

It lays over ruins of reefs and blocks out all the light

It plagues them, creates a disease

And on we go as we please

The solution is in God, and you and me

We need to organize, and regulate what happens on the beach

The poachers prey, like devils in the night

And here we sit, unwilling to fight

The nests, I mean, are attacked with strife

The turtles cradle, the young ones only hope of life

They're harvested, for their leather and shells

Their days are numbered, it doesn’t look well

“Why are we poisoned?” they cry

“Why do you hit us with your motor boats and let us die?!”

“We are running out, we aren’t a luxury”

“We aren’t to be used, not a damn delicacy”

But the turtle’s cries grow hushed

Because their lives are worthless to the majority of us

They need voices standing together strong

Shouting together for a better dawn

A dawn where they’re not endangered

Where we can stop shouting, no longer angered

The time was then, now it’s the present

We need to act, or soon resent it
